It is an effective erosion and sediment control tool used in various situations at a construction site. We temporarily pond up the water behind it to give suspended particles like sand, clay, and silt the time to settle in a contained area. This prevents the sediment from leaving the site.

Silt fencing is often not trenched in or backfilled, which allows sediment to flow underneath it, totally defeating its purpose. If installed well, the silt fence will be trenched six inches, backfilled, and has stakes wrapped and attached outside the sediment flow.
